Elsewhere in the trailer, a lot of mayhem unfolds, including a volcanic explosion, some sort of romantic party with heart confetti, and a visit to an Orion bar – where Mariner is promptly struck in the shoulder by a throwing knife. There’s also an adorable round creature that kinda reminds me of the suicidal star of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” but instead of feeding on the depression of his fellow inmates, this cute little blob feeds on the blood of some creepy aliens.
This trailer looks a lot more serialized than “Star Trek: Lower Decks” usually is, but I wonder if it’s just highlighting the promo arc and mysterious attacks as overarching storylines when the majority of the season will still be episodic. If “Lower Decks” plans to shake things up by offering promotions to its characters lost to history, that would be nice too: in the first three seasons, they’ve proven to be far more heroic than their ranks would indicate.
The promo spot even nods to the live-action crossover, confirming that it’s part of the show’s canon that’s already happened by the time Season 4 aired. “Man, that’s nothing compared to…you know, that Pike thing we’re not supposed to talk about,” Mariner told Boimler at the last second. Intriguing! “Star Trek: Lower Decks” returns to Paramount+ starting September 7, 2023.
