Minions: The Rise of Gru is a 2022 American computer-animated comedy film produced by Illumination and distributed by Universal Pictures. It is the sequel to the spin-off prequel Minions (2015) and the fifth entry overall in the Despicable Me franchise. Directed by Kyle Balda, with Brad Ableson and Jonathan del Val as co-directors, the film features Steve Carell reprising his role as Gru and Pierre Coffin as the Minions, with Taraji P. Henson, Michelle Yeoh, RZA, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lucy Lawless, Dolph Lundgren, Danny Trejo, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, and Alan Arkin also starring.
Minions: The Rise of Gru brings the early story of how the world’s greatest supervillain first meets his iconic Minions. Viewers will be faced with the most unstoppable criminal power in the film, which has been airing since Wednesday (29/6/2022).
Long before becoming a crime lord, Oscar-nominated Gru, Steve Carell, was just an 11-year-old boy in the suburbs. Set in the 1970s, he plans to take over the world from his dungeon at the time.
However, Gru’s plan didn’t go well. When Gru crosses paths with the Minions, namely Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto, they build the first basecamp, design weapons, and try hard to carry out the first mission.
The infamous supervillain supergroup, Vicious 6, overthrow their leader, the legendary martial arts warrior Wild Knuckles (Alan Arkin). While Gru, the most loyal fanboy, was interviewed to be their newest member.
Gru tries to join the group of criminals. When the interview turns into a disaster, Gru and his minions flee.
He then found an unexpected source of guidance that turned out to be from Wild Knuckles himself. He finds the meaning of this incident that even the bad guys still need a little help from their friends.
Meanwhile, the Minions are also trying to master the art of kung fu to help save their master. Featuring more spectacular action than any previous film, Illumination packs the film with the franchise’s signature subversive humor.
Minions: The Rise of Gru stars an exciting new cast, including, Taraji P Henson as the leader of Vicious 6 named Belle Bottom. He’s got a chain belt that doubles as a lethal disco ball stick.
Then there’s Lucy Lawless as Nun-chuck, who has the nun’s traditional habit of hiding her deadly nunchaku. There is also Dolph Lundgren as Swedish roller skate champion, Svengeance, who throws his enemy away with a spinning kick from his skates.
Led by the franchise’s original creators, Minions: The Rise of Gru is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and his longtime collaborators, Janet Healy and Chris Renaud. The film is directed by Kyle Balda as the makers of Despicable Me 3 and Minions with Brad Ableson (The Simpsons) and Jonathan Del Val (The Secret Life of Pets).
The project features the iconic voice of Pierre Coffin on the soundtrack of legendary ’70s “the Minions and a killer” music producer Jack Antonoff.
