Will we ever see a sequel to The Fifth Element?

Will we ever see a sequel to The Fifth Element?

Milla Jovovich once said she’d be happy to play Leeloo again in an interview with Collider, so a sequel could benefit from having at least one returning lead actor. On Earth in 2763, the world must have changed dramatically. Perhaps Earth fell to a fascist leader – a descendant of Zorg, perhaps – and now lives in impoverished misery. The cities are bigger than ever, but military service is compulsory. There are guns everywhere and few places to take comfort. Think of Detroit as it was portrayed in “RoboCop.” The arts, sports, and pop media that once colored the world are now nothing more than high-energy, extra-light propaganda.

If the fascist leader can claim he fought the ultimate evil, he will cement his status as dictator for life. Maybe the fascist has managed to imitate love in a laboratory and knows how to fight evil, or something. It will be up to the bitter and disillusioned Leeloo to use pure love to beat the fascists to death and expose them. Leeloo would no longer be the protected character, but the heroine. Jovovich has starred in enough action spectaculars in her career that she can definitely handle it.

Fast forward 500 years is the logical narrative route to take, as it would serve as both a sequel and a reboot. Turning Earth into a ruined fascist state would highlight the original film’s themes of love versus war. And, of course, it would take a lot of weird and colorful secondary characters and action sequences to keep audiences enthralled.

So while there’s no planned sequel for “The Fifth Element” currently in place, there’s certainly room for a return.
