Cosmic Scream’s Jayden Rathsam Hua to judge Young Creatives Awards

Cosmic Scream’s Jayden Rathsam Hua to judge Young Creatives Awards

Open to 12-24 year olds, the Young Creatives Awards will highlight Sydney’s young people who demonstrate excellence in writing, art and film. Rewards range from cash prizes to exhibitions and presentations.

While the multitude of rewards on offer are indeed enticing, perhaps none more so than a chance to be mentored by the artists of Cosmic Scream, an independent production company specializing in Australian genre content.

One of the co-founders, Jayden Rathsam Hua, will also judge the screen category for the Young Creatives Awards.

“One of the most confusing and intimidating things is having the ambition to make movies but not knowing where to direct that energy,” says Jayden. “I thought it would be a great way to give back to the community, but also a great way to set a precedent for what we want to do at Cosmic Scream, which is to articulate through our actions the kind of change we want see in Industry.”

Cosmic Scream was founded by Hua along with Hugo and Henry Koehne. Working in collaboration with filmmakers who share a passion for the genre, they are fascinated by the power to unite viewers around the world through the universality of humor, fear and our curiosity to peek. behind the curtain.

Genre filmmaking can be a self-indulgent pursuit, where less experienced filmmakers seek uniqueness through the unidentifiable, something Jayden can recognize.

“There’s a difference between someone with expert culinary knowledge walking into a pantry and preparing a dish and someone wearing a blindfold and tossing random things into a pan.”

This insight comes from Jayden’s own experience as a filmmaker. Recently graduated with a master’s degree in production from AFTRS, Hua’s graduate film Sushi Noh, which he also wrote and directed, had a prestigious festival run, playing at festivals such as the Melbourne International Film Festival and the Palm Springs International Shortfest. He recently completed the TIFF Filmmakers Lab where he began development on his first feature film.

The idea for Cosmic Scream was born at TIFF’s Filmmaker Lab.

Talking about the goal of Cosmic Scream, Jayden states that “the spirit of Cosmic Scream is to create an environment that we want for ourselves.”

As an emerging filmmaker himself, Jayden understands the plight of creative youth and is able to offer relevant advice not only on an industry level, but also on a personal level.

“I think the most important thing is to never lose sight of what attracts you,” he says. “Always keep in mind whether or not you create the content you want to create or the content you create expected TO DO.”

Applications for the Young Creative Awards are open until July 31, 2023. For all eligible creatives, find more information on the Inner West website.
