Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Hasbro’s ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ looks set to take the box office crown this weekend, despite coming so close to ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ Sony Pictures it’s still too early to call.
The Disguised Robots are currently on course for a $60 million domestic opening weekend, while “Across the Spider-Verse”‘s second weekend is heading for a $55.8 million debut. We won’t know until later today if Spidey is moving forward or not.
Part of the reason it dominates is that “Rise of the Beasts” took a huge swath of the IMAX and PLF screens that generate more than a third of global gross.
Moviegoers gave “Rise of the Beasts” an A- CinemaScore, identical to previous “Transformers” entry “Bumblebee,” even though its follow-up nearly tripled that film’s opening.
Budgeted at $195m, the film is getting a big boost from overseas with its estimated $100m offshore weekend – half coming from China, which is a big fan of the franchise. .
Meanwhile, the second “Spider-Verse” movie is on track to beat the first movie’s runtime by just nine days. Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid” is expected to come in third with $24 million.
