Movie Tropes at Halle Berry For One

Halle Berry has posted a meme lambasting one of her most common movie tropes. Halle Berry a meme on Twitter making fun of how many times of hers have saved children onscreen in the past few years.

John Wick & Bruised Show How Catwoman Failed Halle Berry, 2004’s Catwoman was infamously terrible, but Halle Berry’s later roles in John Wick 3 and Bruised have let her shine in the ways Catwoman didn’t. Halle Berry’s roles in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and her directorial debut Bruised have given her the chance to show what she can do in an action role, which Catwoman failed to do. The 2004 Catwoman was originally meant to be a spin-off from Michelle Pfeiffer’s portrayal in Batman Returns. However, after years of development hell, the Catwoman movie ended up lacking any and all connection to DC anti-heroine beyond her name, and is perhaps the most infamous comic book film ever made. Upon its release, Catwoman bombed spectacularly, and remains a superhero movie punchline to this day.

The film’s highly negative reception, and has also commented on wanting to take another shot at Catwoman, on the condition that she’d direct.

The actress broke onto the scene in the early 1990s before entering the 2000s with a whirlwind of roles in both big-budget blockbusters and indie darlings. Between starring in films like the X-Men trilogy and Die Another Day, she won an Oscar for Best Actress for her role in the 2001 film Monster’s Ball. Berry’s more recent high-profile roles have included appearances in the blockbuster sequels Kingsman: The Golden Circle and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, as well as the 2022 Roland Emmerich disaster flick Moonfall.

Berry has made a lot of mid-budget projects in between those films, many of which share one crucial plot element: they often involve Berry on a desperate search to save a young child. These movies include The Call, in which Berry’s character is a 911 operator who must find a way to save a teen girl (Abigail Breslin) after she is abducted by a serial killer. Another recent entry stars Berry as Karla Dyson, a mother who must chase down a mysterious assailant who holds her son Frankie (Sage Correa) captive after kidnapping him from a carnival: the 2017 film Kidnap.

Halle Berry has made saving children her bread and butter as of late. As her recent action roles have proved, she’s absolutely up to the challenge of delivering high-octane thrills, whoever it is she’s fighting for. However, by poking fun at herself she has also proven that she has the ability to laugh when she’s not on set being intense. The movies she has made recently, it might also be a hint about one of Berry’s upcoming projects. It could certainly be the case that she is considering a script for a project that made her think of just how many times she has saved kids onscreen in the past decade. It’s equally possible that the project that has stirred this up is her upcoming horror thriller Mother Land, which is being directed by Alexandre Aja (High Tension) and Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo) and follows a family being haunted by an evil spirit.

Berry has also jumped into directing with her new movie Bruised, in which she portrays an ex-MMA champion who gets a shot to return to the fighting game. What’s interesting about both the MMA setting of Bruised and Berry’s earlier role in John Wick 3 is that both have given Halle Berry a far better chance to take on an action role with a lot of physicality than Catwoman did. Though Berry trained in Capoeira for Catwoman, the movie’s fight scenes were shredded by choppy editing lacking in any flow or coherence, and also made surreal by the questionable design choices used for the character’s suit. Halle Berry could have risen into prominence via Catwoman had the film been received differently – but as it stood, few came away from cinemas aware of how much she’d committed to the role. With John Wick 3 and Bruised, Berry got the chance to become an action star – something that Catwoman and its many complications had ultimately failed to provide. For John Wick 3, Berry trained extensively at the famed 87 Eleven gym in martial arts and firearms for her role as Sofia, an old friend turned begrudging ally of the legendary assassin John Wick, and it paid off very well in the movie itself. In the Moroccan mansion battle, Sofia is seen as John’s genuine equal in both armed and unarmed combat.

MMA fan, Berry fully committed herself as both the leading lady and as director on Bruised. Production on the film did have to be temporarily shut down after Berry experienced an injury, but like John Wick 3, Bruised is doing what Catwoman was completely ill-equipped to.
