The Walking Dead didn’t quite put Fear the living dead still sleeping, but the franchise has already launched its first new spin-off, The Walking Dead: The Dead City. Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan reprise their roles in this series, in which they (recklessly) travel through Manhattan to capture Maggie and Glenn’s son, Hershel. Overall, this season is an exciting throwback, and in the premiere we hear about the new “big bad,” known as The Croat. Who is he?
Well, we don’t know everything yet, obviously, since this is only the series premiere (“Old Acquaintances”), and heck, I’m just glad the series hasn’t decided to ship Maggie and Negan as a certain group of surely joking viewers. Instead, they come into direct conflict with the Croatian, who is played by Željko Ivanel, seen below left.
As Maggie relates to Negan, she heard about the Croat when he came down to his new camp, which is basically full of people from Hilltop but in a different location. He’s a former member of Negan’s team, which Maggie quickly figured out due to how she met Negan during the scene of Glenn’s death. The Croatian made this association known by dropping Negan’s old Savior whistle.
The look on Negan’s face when he hears that hiss? A mixture of shame and regret: “Oh. This Croatian.
Turns out the Croatian was a sort of understudy for Negan. “Let’s just say there were a lot of psychopaths on my team back then,” the semi-reformed villain said. “But he always stood out as an exceptionally crazy son of a bitch.” And here’s what Morgan said previously EO:
The Croat is an unwanted blast from Negan’s past. “He’s an underling to Negan at the time,” Morgan reveals, “But he took evil places where even Negan in his prime didn’t go… Negan gave birth to this monster in character. from Željko.”
Maggie lets Negan (who is also wanted by the Marshals) know that he has no choice but to help her find Hershel. At the end of the episode, we learn – when the Croat appears threatening the imprisoned Hershel – that the Croat probably kidnapped Hershel to get to Negan.
“Have you ever met the man who killed your father?” The Croat asks Hershel. “He lived among your mother’s people for years. Negan. What do you know about him?” And he looks like a real sadistic bastard, as seen when he tricks another prisoner into thinking he’s escaping, only to send them crashing down a skyscraper. sky in the depths of the city filled with walkers, surely soon we will know more about what the Croatian really wants.
CMA Fear the living dead broadcast on Sunday evenings.
