The weather outside is the weather! Jason Segel wrote one of the most popular romantic comedies of all time when he wrote Forget Sarah Marshall — and it all started with his own awkward breakup!
“I broke up while naked in real life. It was a really bad day,” how i met your mother alum told the ladies to View during a 2018 interview. “My girlfriend was out of town and she called me from the airport and said, ‘Hey, are you home, can I come? When she arrived I was expecting her like Burt Reynolds and she came in and I said ‘I was expecting you’ and she said ‘We need to talk. And then this breakup started.
The 2007 film, which included an enhanced version of Segel’s own awkward breakup, follows struggling musician Peter Bretter (Segel) as he travels to Hawaii in a last-ditch effort to forget his ex-girlfriend Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell). Trouble arises when he meets his ex on the island who is vacationing with her new boyfriend but finds his own second chance at love with hotel employee Rachel Janson (Mila Kunis).
The unorthodox romantic comedy had an all-star supporting cast, including Bill Hader, Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd And Russell Brand as Aldous Snow – a role that not only led to the 2010 comedy Take it to the Greek – but was originally intended for the actor Charlie Hunnam.
“Jason Segel wrote Forget Sarah Marshall for him and me to do together, and he wrote this role [of Aldous Snow] for me”, the Sons of Anarchy said during a November 2020 interview with Collider. “I went there and had the board read and it was very successful… but I felt that I had to grasp the trajectory [of my career] and it just wasn’t really what I wanted to do… He’s one of my best friends, but I had to tell him, ‘I’m so sorry, I’m not going to do that.’
While the England native revealed he had come to regret his decision, he soon realized that Brand was ultimately the right person for the job.
“Obviously he’s the guy who should have played that role,” he admitted. “Obviously I just needed to deviate from how the universe manifests as it was supposed to.”
