The Boogeyman Ending Explained

The Boogeyman Ending Explained

Sadie narrowly misses the first signal from her mother’s ghost. As his flame leans slightly to the left, Sawyer knocks on his door, fearing there is something in his room. We know what she noticed was the Boogeyman starting to play with her food, but Sadie dismisses it as her sister’s childhood fear. Rather than a coincidence, the Boogeyman likely chose this moment to terrorize Sawyer, knowing it would distract Sadie from her mother’s cue. The Beast plans to feed on her depression and knows the slightest comfort could lift Sadie’s spirits and ruin the grim game.

Sadie has more success contacting her mother in the basement. She watches videos of Cara and unknowingly gives fuel to the Boogeyman to create a cruel approximation. We see two visions of Sadie’s mother, one in the dark and one in the light. The faceless woman standing next to the portrait may be the Boogeyman impersonating Cara, similar to how he wandered the Harper household disguised as Lester Billings (David Dastmalchian). When Sadie turns on the light, she sees her mother’s true face for a moment, the authentic spirit of Cara using the light to contact her daughter. In the climactic battle in the basement, Cara’s ghost uses fire again to defend her family, producing a huge Zippo flame and bending it sharply to the left. Not only has Cara always been with her family, but her loving light is stronger than the Boogeyman’s darkness.
