Last month, as the lawsuits against him over classified documents escalated — and after he essentially confessed to the crowd — something unusual happened to Donald Trump: He started slipping into surveys. Some of them, reflecting certain key states, even showed him being narrowly beaten by his closest challenger, “Meatball” Ron DeSantis. But the Florida governor still suffers in most polls, and his team finally admits he’s getting his ass kicked.
“Right now in the national polls we’re way behind, I’ll be the first to admit that,” DeSantis spokesman Steve Cortes said during a Twitter Spaces event, according to Policy. “I believe in being direct and honest. It’s an uphill battle, but clearly Donald Trump is the runaway favorite.
Cortes, who worked on the Trump campaign in 2016 and 2020 before landing for DeSantis, tried to push the news, calling them a “clear underdog.” But he couldn’t help but be gloomy: “In the first four states which matter a lot, the polls are much tighter, we are still clearly behind. We are down double digits, we have work to do.
There was a bit more spin to come. “If we don’t win – and I fully intend to win, I didn’t sign up for it to come second – but if we don’t win I’ll tell you,” he said. Cortes said, “We’ll do President Trump better to have this kind of primary.
Sure, DeSantis hammered Trump, which doesn’t exactly make him stronger — or at least in theory. Trump definitely looks the best after the bizarrely homophobic (but homoerotic) ad the team released on Friday. Maybe DeSantis would sound better if he had a nicer personality — that is, a completely different one.
