Root, root, root! Over the years, plenty of celebrities have proven to be big baseball fans — throwing the first pitch at games or hanging out in the stands on date night.
In June 2021, Emma Stone and her husband, David McCary, enjoyed a Padres game on a rare date night. McCary is a “lifetime Padres fan,” according to the announcer during a September 2017 game where he threw the first pitch.
“La La Land… Naaahhhh… More like Padre Land!” Thanks to Emma Stone and her husband David McCary for visiting us on the stand. It was really a pleasure! Go Padre! #bestactress,” the Padres TV analyst Mark Grant wrote via Twitter after meeting the pair, pairing his caption with a photo of them hanging out at his private booth.
Some celebrities have taken their baseball dates one step further. In October 2013, Kanye West pulled off a top secret proposal for his now estranged wife, Kim Kardashian, at AT&T Stadium, home of the San Francisco Giants. The rapper popped the question by setting the Jumbotron to read “PLEEEEASE MARRY MEEE!”
“It was magical,” a source said We Weekly at the time. “It was the most romantic thing ever – the ultimate surprise!”
Baseball was also the star of another love affair. Kate Upton and her husband, Justin Verlandermet in February 2012 on the set of an advertisement for the Major League Baseball 2K12 video game.
“It has been such an amazing decade! Meeting my best friend, getting married and starting a family has been the most amazing gift ever!!! Nothing beats that,” Verlander, an Astros pitcher, wrote via Instagram in December 2019 as he reflected on the impact love and baseball had on his life. “On the field…winning a championship, throwing a few hits and winning a few awards along the way has been an incredible journey. Friendships that have developed or started over the past decade will continue for decades. Truly blessed 🙏🏻🙏🏻.”
Baseball also loves stars. After Jennifer Lopez was spotted hanging out with her ex – and noted the Red Sox superfan – Ben Affleck in May 2021, the team reached out to let the “I’m Real” singer know she was welcome in the stands anytime.
“I miss you J-Lo ❤️,” the Red Sox wrote via TikTok. “We will never forget you. Come back soon.”
The baseball-based convo surrounding the couple continued when Lopez’s ex, Alex Rodriguezwas questioned about the Hustlers reunion of the actress with the producer Argo.
“Come on Yankees,” the longtime MLB star cheekily told TMZ at the time. While his comment may have been an innocent nod to his former team, it could also have been a playful dig at Affleck’s beloved Boston team – aka the Yankees’ biggest rivals.
