“A hustler, a pimp and a pro enter into a conspiracy theory.”
This is the one-sentence synopsis of Netflix’s upcoming star-studded comedy, They cloned Tyrone – a movie featuring everyone from Jamie Foxx, John Boyega and Teyonah Parris to *check the notes*… Keifer Sutherland?
Oh shit, we’ll go for it if it’s even half as weird and wild as the movie’s trailer, which dropped early Tuesday morning. From debut director Juel Taylor, this sci-fi-tinged action-comedy feels full of ’70s funk, pop culture references, and Foxx singing Mary J. Blige ballads while rocking the leather and fur of merlot. So much fur.
Here’s everything we know about the movie.
When They cloned Tyrone To be freed
Netflix has the plot caper slated for a July 21 release date after pushing back its premiere from its original 2022 drop.
At one point, it was rumored that the movie would land on the streamer in December 2022, but that obviously didn’t pan out. And that’s a good thing, too, because it looks like the kind of summer sci-fi geeks that geeks will love.
What is They cloned Tyrone About?
The film’s synopsis marks it as a “pulpy sci-fi mystery” that features Boyega, Parris, and Foxx investigating a “nefarious conspiracy lurking directly under their hoods.” Boyega plays Fontaine, a local drug dealer killed in a drive-by shooting. Parris plays Yo-Yo, a sex worker, and Foxx is Slick Charles, her eccentric pimp. The two witnesses to Fontaine’s death make his visit to Slick Charles’ motel the next day all the more puzzling. What follows is a hilarious adventure as the trio attempt to uncover a sinister plot to entrap and experiment on the people of their neighborhood.
For any budding filmmakers — or fans who don’t mind plot twist endings being spoiled — the full script for the film can be read here. The story was originally featured on The Blacklist in 2019 – a platform where filmmakers share scripts in hopes a studio will pick them up. Although Taylor is a first-time director, he wrote Creed II and the Lebron James biopic, Shooting Starsso he has the chops.
Is there a trailer for They cloned Tyrone?
A teaser for the movie was released in September 2022, but Netflix finally followed that up with a full trailer that gives us a bit more to go on in terms of how the movie looks. The two-minute clip and a few changes features Boyega, Parris, and Foxx quickly teaming up to get to the bottom of all the “weird shit” going on in their town. And they do it while Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me” plays eerily in the background.
