‘Futurama’ returns with an eleventh season on July 24
The new season will begin streaming on Hulu from July 24. This will be the show’s final revival ten years after it last ended with its final season airing on Comedy Central. Hulu promises new viewers will be able to experience the series from the start, as well as developments in the ongoing love affair between Fry and Leela, the mysterious contents of Nibbler’s litter box, the secret story of Evil Robot Santa and the comings and goings of Kif and Amy’s tadpoles.
The show will also be topical as the official synopsis documents mention a “new pandemic in town as the crew explores the future of vaccines, bitcoin, cancel culture and streaming TV.” . The new trailer shows a satire on the COVID-19 pandemic and the infamous nasal swab test. Professor Farnsworth demonstrates the test by sticking the swab into his nose. Dr. Zoidberg replies, “Sounds fun! I can’t wait to do it hundreds of times! It also looks like the new season will riff on smart home speakers and more.
The series has come a long way since its debut on the FOX network in 1999. “Futurama” won two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program throughout its run. The story follows young New York pizza delivery boy Philip J. Fry (West), who accidentally freezes in 1999 and is unfrozen in the year 3000. He now lives in the city of future New York, becoming best friends with alcoholic robot Bender (DiMaggio), and falling in love with Cyclops Leela. Together the group work at the Planet Express Delivery Company, owned by Fry’s elderly descendant, Professor Hubert Farnsworth. Throughout the series and animated films, the group has embarked on various adventures through all corners of the universe.
Season 11 will consist of 20 episodes which will debut next month. The series was created by Matt Groening (“The Simpsons”) and developed by Groening and David X. Cohen. Executive producers for the new season include Groening, Cohen, Ken Keeler, and Claudia Katz.
As previously reported by The Blast, Bender’s voice actor DiMaggio was the latest to confirm he would be returning for the revival. However, he later made a deal to return to the show in March 2022. DiMaggio wrote about his social networks in February, “Bender is part of my soul and nothing about it is meant to be disrespectful to the fans or my Futurama family. It’s a question of self-respect. And honestly, being tired of an industry that has become way too corporate and taking advantage of an artist’s time and talent.
After signing a deal to return to the show, DiMaggio later said, “I’M BACK, BABY! So grateful for the love and support from fans and colleagues all this time (especially my wife, Kate), and I can’t wait to get back to working with my “Futurama” family.
Fans who want to catch or rewatch the previous ten 140-episode seasons of “Futurama” can stream the show now on Hulu.
