Like a poet recounting the story of a long-lost lover, the 36-year-old’s story began with a dreamy tune: “I met Paula when I was twenty. Sitting on our friend’s couch, eating raw almonds with her knees to her chest, she introduced herself, “I’m Paula.”

“The sound of his voice exuded a warmth, a kindness. It wasn’t so much that his eyes lit up but that they found you. I could feel her watching,” the account continued. “We went to Reflections. It was my first time going to a gay bar, and it would be the last for a long time. I was a miserable flirt.

At the time, the Halifax native was a rising Hollywood sensation, but playing his role confidently on TV didn’t automatically make Page fluent with words. The ‘Juno’ star confessed he flirted when he didn’t want to and not when he wanted to.

Despite his poor pickup lines, the Gotham Award winner noted that his time at the gay bar was a wonderful new experience. As someone who previously suffered from queer shame, being in such an environment and enjoying it was magical.

“Shame had been drilled into my bones since I was myself, and I struggled to rid my body of that toxic, erosive old marrow,” the Canadian sensation explained. “But there was a joy in the room; it lifted me up, forced a reaction in my jaw, an uncontrolled, constant smile.

“Dancing, sweat running down my back, down my chest. I watched Paula’s hair twist and bounce as she moved effortlessly, chaotic but controlled, sultry and strong. I caught her looking at me, or was it the other way around? We wanted to be caught – deer in the headlights. Surprised, but not broken,” the author added.

The air thickened with their chemistry, an irresistible charm that instilled in Page the confidence he needed to shake off his “repression at the door.” Surrendering to the emotions welling up in his heart, the 36-year-old asked for permission to kiss Paula.

“And then I did. In a weird bar. In front of everyone around us. I was beginning to understand what all these poems were about, what it was all about,” the TV personality revealed, noting that the “antagonistic, cruel voice” that flooded his head whenever he felt the desire was finally silent.

Overjoyed by the kiss, the ‘Hard Candy’ actor said the moment showed his path from Ellen to Elliot. “Here, I was on the edge of the abyss. I was getting closer to my desires, to my dreams, to me, without the unbearable weight of self-loathing I had carried for so long,” the trans icon wrote.
