The cast of Warner Bros.’ ‘Mortal Kombat’ sequel Discovery continues to grow. Now star of ‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ Adeline Rodolphe (“Riverdale,” “Resident Evil”) as longtime Kombatant Kitana, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The 2021 film’s sequel is currently in the works, with Simon McQuoid set to return as director of the upcoming sequel. McQuoid directs from a screenplay by Jeremy Slater, which will see the fighters of Earthrealm continue their fight against Outworld to protect our existence.
Kitana is a longtime fighter in the “Mortal Kombat” video game series, who made her arcade debut in “Mortal Kombat II”, which was first released in 1993. She is best known for her signature and his murderous steel war fans. Kitana is initially introduced as the daughter of Outworld Emperor Shao Kahn. It is later revealed that Kahn murdered his father, the former Emperor, to gain control of his homeland, Edenia. Kitana is also the daughter of fellow longtime “MK” fighter, Sindel, and the sister or clone role model of fan-favorite Mileena, who also debuted in Mortal Kombat II.
The video games originally featured Mileena as Kitana’s “twin sister”. Kitana would later turn on Outworld and ally with Earthrealm’s special forces in their fight against Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung.
Rudolph joins the cast of the sequel alongside newcomers Karl Urban (“Lord of the Rings,” “The Boys”) as Johnny Cage and Tati Gabrielle (“Uncharted,” “You”) as Jade . Rudolph will once again team up with his “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” co-star for the upcoming film. Gabrielle portrayed Prudence Night in the series, with Rudolph portraying Agatha.
Much of the cast from the first film is also set to reprise their roles for the sequel. The first film was released in theaters and on HBO Max in April 2021 during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. While the movie only grossed around $84 million worldwide, it was reportedly one of HBO Max’s biggest hits on the streamer, so apparently it did well enough to get a sequel.
The sequel is produced by James Wan (“The Conjuring”, “Saw”, “Aquaman”) and Michael Clear for their Atomic Monster banner and Todd Garner of Broken Road Production. McQuoid and E. Bennett Walsh are also attached to produce the sequel.
The cast of Rudolph marks his big-screen debut for the franchise’s upcoming sequel. She is also set to play the female lead in the upcoming film, “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” from Millenium Films, which is currently in the works by director Brian Taylor. The film will see Jack Kesy don the makeup and stone hand of the classic comic book character created by Mike Mignola.
The future of the “Mortal Kombat” franchise
“Mortal Kombat 2” does not yet have a release date. Additionally, the entertainment industry faces an ongoing labor strike by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). AMPTP’s current contracts with interim and executive unions will expire on June 30. If new agreements with the blocs are not reached by then, the interim union SAG-AFTRA and the Directors Guild of America (DGA) could also declare strikes.
While some big-budget sequels, such as “Beetlejuice 2” and “Deadpool 3,” have already started filming during the WGA strike, several other projects have been put on hold until strike issues are resolved.
Meanwhile, the “Mortal Kombat” video game franchise is stronger than ever. The next installment in the game series, “Mortal Kombat 1”, has been announced for release on September 19. Kitana and her mortal fans will be back for the next game.
