Disney’s Snow White Live-Action Remake Gets 2024 Release Date

Disney’s Snow White Live-Action Remake Gets 2024 Release Date

Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler as the classic Disney princess, is coming to theaters in 2024.
Disney has put a date on the board for the upcoming live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Per Variety, the news comes as the House of Mouse sets release dates for multiple films, which also includes scheduling other films like Inside Out 2 for June 14, 2024, and Mufasa: The Lion King on July 5, 2024. The new Snow White, featuring Rachel Zegler as the titular Disney princess, has been officially set for March 22, 2024.

This new Snow White is based on the animated Disney movie that was released in 1937, though that film was inspired by the original 1812 fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. Marc Webb directed the live-action adaptation using a screenplay by Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson. Along with Zegler in the lead, the film also stars Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. Martin Klebba has also stated that he will play Grumpy in the movie, but no other casting information about the dwarfs has yet been announced.

There has been some speculation over how the dwarfs will be depicted in the movie following some criticism against the Snow White remake by Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage. From his view, Dinklage thought it made no sense for Disney to cast a Latina actress as Snow White while still including dwarf characters, which he felt had been stereotypical caricatures of little people in the original animated film.

“Literally no offense to anyone, but I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White, but you’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” Dinklage said on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast. “Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me… You’re progressive in one way, but then you’re still making that fing backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f are you doing, man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soap box? I guess I’m not loud enough.”

There were rumors that “magical creatures” would be used in place of the dwarfs, but what exactly the plan is for Dopey and pals in the new film remains to be seen. With at least one actor claiming to have been cast

Rachel Zegler Is Happy to Be Snow White

There has been a certain level of criticism over the casting of Rachel Zegler as Snow White, as the animated version of the Disney princess is white. This is not dissimilar to the recent backlash to the teaser for The Little Mermaid revealing Halle Bailey as a Black Ariel. For her part, Zegler admits that she was just as surprised that she was cast in that role. At the same time, she’s happy to embrace it, as it presents an important opportunity for her as an actress.

“Never in a million years did I imagine that this would be a possibility for me,” Zegler previously said, per Variety. “You don’t normally see Snow Whites that are of Latin descent. Even though Snow White is really a big deal in Spanish-speaking countries. Blanca Nieves is a huge icon whether you’re talking about the Disney cartoon or just different iterations and the Grimm fairy tale and all the stories that come with it.”

She added, “But you don’t particularly see people who look like me or are me playing roles like that. When it was announced, it was a huge thing that was trending on Twitter for days, because all of the people were angry. We need to love them in the right direction. At the end of the day, I have a job to do that I’m really excited to do. I get to be a Latina princess.”
