Mad Max: Fury Road debuted in 2015 to a box office haul of $375 million. Nine years will have passed since that film’s debut and the premiere of Mad Max: Furiosa, with principal photography on the prequel already in production. Like the other movies in the Mad Max timeline, filming is underway in Australia, and much of the plot and characters are under a shroud of secrecy.

Furiosa is an upcoming spinoff of Mad Max: Fury Road that will follow the titular war captain who turned against Immortan Joe in order to free the Five Wives. Furiosa will actually serve as a prequel to Fury Road, but plot details besides that are thin. Most of Fury Road’s crew is returning to work on Furiosa, including director George Miller and screenwriter Nico Lathouris. One notable exception is Fury Road’s Furiosa actress Charlize Theron, with Anya Taylor-Joy playing Furiosa in the spinoff. Furiosa already has a handful of big names attached, but one of the biggest is the film’s villain: Chris Hemsworth. Hemsworth will be playing Furiosa’s villain, reportedly a character named Warlord Dementus. While Hemsworth’s career has mostly consisted of him playing likable heroes (most notably in Marvel’s Thor franchise), the actor has recently had a few stints as antagonists. The two most famous examples of this are his characters in Bad Times at the El Royale and the more recent Netflix film Spiderhead. With Chris Hemsworth now playing the villain in a film as big as Furiosa, all signs point to the actor finally giving a career-defining villain performance, spurred on by the expansive and exciting universe he now has a role within.
Hemsworth did well in El Royale and Spiderhead, both films got mixed reviews, with many critics saying the films needed their scrips polished. The casting of Chris Hemsworth in Mad Max: Furiosa was announced last year, which fueled speculation about who he would embody. On-set images of a bearded Chris Hemsworth were unveiled recently, prompting discussions on social media about Hemsworth’s possible character. To date, there has not been confirmation of his character’s name or biography, but the current theory is that he is likely playing Dementus.
Mad Max universe, Dementus is a warlord who leads the Biker Horde, a group of bikers known to threaten and steal to survive. Mad Max: Furiosa will feature Furiosa before she becomes Imperator Furiosa and showcase her time in the Green Place before she is forced to exist in the Wasteland. In the Wasteland, she encounters Dementus, a known villain and enemy of a fellow tyrant, Immortan Joe. The story will focus on Furiosa’s earliest journeys, but it will also serve as a glimpse into the younger life of Immortan Joe, who was famously played by Hugh Keays-Byrne in Mad Max and Mad Max: Fury Road.
