Atletico Madrid CEO Talks About Vinicius: We Are Victims Too

Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has spoken out about racism to Vinicius Junior. He said Los Colchoneros were also victims. Atletico fans racially attacked Vinicius in the Madrid derby last weekend. The home fans chanted and carried a stuffed monkey, which was addressed to the Real Madrid player outside the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

The action has received criticism from LaLiga, as well as many parties. Atletico then made a firm statement that they would investigate the incident. Next, CEO Angel Gil Marin raised his voice about the racist incident to Vinicius Junior. He assessed that the racist attitude was carried out by a handful of people, not representing the club.

“I know our fans well and it is unacceptable for someone to think they are racist. The cheers are from the minority and it is a shame for us Atlético. It cannot tarnish the image of the club, or the behavior and sentiments of the great majority,” he told the club’s official website.

Angel Gil Marin then also emphasized that racism is a complicated problem that must be resolved by all parties. He also said that Atletico had also been victims.

“I also have to point out, chasing this scourge is everyone’s job, not just club managers. They accuse us, when in fact we are victims too,” he said.

The Madrid derby itself was then won by Real Madrid over Atletico Madrid with a score of 2-1. Vinicius Junior, who performed well, countered the racism of the home fans by dancing to celebrate his team-mate’s goal.

LaLiga commented on Atletico Madrid fans who were racist towards Real Madrid winger, Vinicius Junior. The Spanish league condemned it. Vinicius experienced racist abuse from Atletico Madrid fans. LaLiga immediately reacted condemning it. He promised to immediately investigate and impose sanctions. The racist attitude of Atlético Madrid supporters, continued similar abuse by the President of the Association of Spanish Agents, Pedro Bravo. He asked Vinicius not to dance like a monkey.

Vinicius Junior himself remained calm in the face of abuse against him. He performed well to help Real Madrid win 2-1 over Atletico Madrid, which brought Los Blancos back to the top of the Spanish League standings.
